New traffic signals at the Hanley Road intersection with Government Street, along with the Government/Ocean Springs Road intersection, will finally be activated March 20.

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi -- The long-awaited traffic signals on Government Street at Hanley Road and Ocean Springs Road will finally be activated March 20, according to an email sent out by Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran Thursday morning.

Moran received an email from CSX Railroad engineer Jeremy Plyler last week informing her the signals will be put in service March 20. He requested city employees involved in the synchronization process be present for testing at 8 a.m. that morning.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation completed construction of the two new signals -- the first-ever on Government Street -- in early December, but they have remained inactive awaiting synchronization by CSX with the railroad crossings and U.S. 90 traffic signals.

The $562,156 project was paid for largely through a $522,760 MDOT grant, with Jackson County contributing $50,000. The city spent $58,429 in engineering fees for the project, but after the grant and the county's contribution the city's total cost was $47,825.

MDOT broke ground on the project July 16.
